9.1 Cultural events and exhibitions
The Michelangelo cult, far from being relegated to the liturgical or devotional sphere alone, has been the subject, in recent decades, of an intense cultural promotion that has involved institutions, local authorities, universities, artistic associations and pilgrim communities. The figure of the Archangel Michael - protector, psychopomp, warrior and guide - has inspired exhibitions, festivals, reviews and multimedia itineraries in Italy and Europe, capable of renewing interest in places of worship and its narratives.
Art and photography exhibitions
"San Michele. Tra cielo e terra" (Viterbo, 2015): an exhibition curated by Maria Andaloro, dedicated to the iconography of St. Michael from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age, with sacred artworks, miniatures and devotional objects from Italian and French sanctuaries.
"Michael, the angel of the peaks" (travelling exhibition, 2019-2022): photographic installation promoted by the European network of micaelic paths, with images from the sanctuaries of the "Sacred Line" (Monte Sant'Angelo, Sacra di San Michele, Mont-Saint-Michel, Skellig Michael).
"The Pilgrim and the Image" (Bari, Biblioteca Nazionale): a digital and interactive exhibition on the iconographic and symbolic imagery of the pilgrim micaelico, born from an academic collaboration between universities and libraries.
Festivals and artistic routes
Festival 'La Spada e l'Ala' (Monte Sant'Angelo): annual review combining theatre, music, photography and spirituality on the theme of the Archangel and the inner journey. It also involves workshops for young people and families.
Digital and hybrid events
"Michael in the Clouds and the Rock" - Virtual Tour of the Micael Sanctuary of the
Gargano: initiative launched during the pandemic, now permanently accessible online.
Docu-event "Via Micaelica. The Archangel's Path', screened in numerous dioceses and civic libraries on the occasion of the European Day of the Paths.
Cultural impact
These initiatives not only promote the micaelico heritage through visual and performative languages, but also build local and international networks of collaboration, reactivate territories, involve new generations and make the walk a widespread and participatory cultural experience.
